Autism Awareness Month: Thomas thriving at Daisy Inclusive UK

As part of Autism Awareness Month, we sat down with Daisy Inclusive UK Support Worker Rachael Lindsay, whose son, Thomas, was diagnosed as autistic aged three.

Joining Daisy two-years ago, Rachael says Thomas has come out of his shell thanks to the amazing work of Daisy – a disability charity in Liverpool which help vulnerable people and their families to reach their true potential.

“When he received his diagnosis, it was during lockdown,” said Rachael.

“Face-to-face appointments were obviously not allowed, so that took away some of the compassion as well as the understanding and reassurance.”

Explaining his disability, she added: “One of the big things with him is his relationship with water. I remember waiting for the bus and it had been raining. A drop of rain fell on his coat and he had a meltdown.

“With a meltdown, it’s not easy to deal with. Some people think it’s a temper tantrum, but the way he processes the situation is different and he didn’t understand.”

Now thriving thanks to the work of Daisy, Rachael is proud of Thomas’ development, saying: “When we first joined Daisy, he was nervous and would hide behind me and he wouldn’t join in with any activities, but now he’s thriving.

“One of the families in particular, has come up to me and said that he’s made unbelievable progress since the day he came through the doors of Daisy.

“Thomas is engaged with all the staff and the other families, and it’s brilliant to see. It’s great to see how much he’s come out of his shell and how much his communication and engagement has improved.

“That’s all because of Daisy Inclusive UK.”
